There are many ways to lead churches. I think those decisions should be based on a variety of factors (which I talk about in “Church on the Other Side”).
It sounds like you’re questioning the dominant top-down, CEO-style pastorate. Pastoring is so hard, and I’m in favor of us all having compassion on and respect for our pastors, whatever their styles of leadership – but I also agree that the dominant models are often unhealthy for congregations, mission, and pastors themselves.
