I read your article in Sojourners with great interest.
How would you address the issue of God working through a biblical text as the source of inspiration for a sermon?
I was recently in a conversation with an Episcopal priest regarding sermons on the situation in Iraq and it was mentioned that a sermon should be based on God's inspiration coming through the word of God.
Do you think it likely that clergy might not preach on issues such as the upcoming election or the war in Iraq because they did not feel God's inspiration coming through the appointed scripture for that Sunday (i.e. Revised Common Lectionary readings)
Art – great point. I wasn’t even thinking of the lectionary, and I’d agree – if a person didn’t feel so led by the Spirit, she shouldn’t go into this territory at all.
