I recall you writing that your church is a mix of many demographics, including modern and postmodern.
I am certain it is a result of your extraordinary giftedness though, for the lessers like me, how do you remain sincere to your postmodern convictions without alienating the modern minds in your congregation?
And how do you get postmoderns through the door? My experience is that I encounter and engage postmoderns constantly though they are steadfastly against attending any church. Moderns play the church game real well thus they create the organizational backbone of our community. Hence the moderns are not crazy about the message I deliver though provide the framework for it to be heard while the postmoderns seem to either stay away or only get peripherally involved (you know, it is organized church, man). Thoughts?
Answer: It’s not easy. I do less well with the modern churched folk who have a long-developed taste for truth cooked in the modern way their ancestors cooked it. This is understandable. But I find the degree to which I a) am faithful to the heart of Scripture, b) am myself, and c) aim for the deepest human needs (deeper than “seeker, believer, modern, or postmodern” needs) … the better things go. But be assured – they don’t always go well for me either.
