Hi! You've reached a page that's a hold-over from my old site. Come see my new site here!

I see lots of parallels between "The Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association" and postmodernism. Is there a difference?

In response to a rumor posted to your site, you dismissed Universalism with...

...a simplistic answer focused merely on salvation from hell. But as I read The Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association, as summarized online at Answers.com, I see striking similarities to your postmodern perspective of Christianity. For example, I see parallels in your postmodern philosophy to their use of resaon and science as a guide to faith, their celebration of the "sacred circle of life" and inclusion of "wisdom from the world's religions."

I did not hear a rumor that you were a Universalist, but I began wondering if that was so after reading the first two books in your NKOC trilogy. Can you elaborate on what makes your version of Christian thought/experience different from the principles of Universalism?

Answer: First of all, I’m a Trinitarian, not a Unitarian. So that disqualifies me before we even come to the issue of universalism. My newest book, “The Last Word and the Word After That” takes a couple hundred pages to explore issues of hell, so that might be a good place to explore some of my thinking on this important subject. At the end of the day, my views are not very different from those of C. S. Lewis.
